Centralized Cooling & Chilled Water Distribution
South Dakota School of Mines & Technology | Rapid City, SD
West Plains Engineering provided design and construction phase services for the campus of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The project included a complete new chilled water plant with water cooled centrifugal chillers, cooling tower, pumps and a campus piping distribution loop that connected to systems in several buildings. The chiller plant included (2) 540 ton variable speed chillers, an open loop cooling tower with chemical treatment and free cooling capability up to 100 tons, a campus wide DDC control system with graphics and a variable speed campus loop pumping system. The new chiller room was provided with a freon detection system with alarm panel and notification. Through a separate project, West Plains Engineering provided design services to upgrade the electrical service (for the new chiller plant) to a new 3000 amp, 480V system.
