South Dakota School of Mines & Technology

Surbeck Center Student Union | Rapid City, SD

West Plains Engineering provided mechanical and electrical design services for Phase II of the Surbeck Center student life renovation at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

The history of the Surbeck Center dates back to the late 1950s when it was noted that a Student Union style space was needed for students to study and play together. The original building was finally completed in 1963 with an addition in 1970s on the west side that provided a new book store and dining hall. Phase 1 of renovations was completed in 2004.

Phase II (this project) renovated most of the north half of the Surbeck Center. In the basement, this included the renovation of the kitchen, serving and dining areas. It also reconfigured office and meeting spaces, provided new seating for student study and lounge areas with wireless computer support.

On the main level, most of the offices, conference rooms, and the bookstore were renovated. As part of this renovation project, most of the mechanical and electrical systems serving them were replaced and updated to meet current and future needs.
