Butt’s Army Airfield – Distribution System Upgrade

West Plains Engineering was responsible for the design to replace the underground 12.47 cable feeding Butt’s Army Air Field at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, CO.

This $1.6 million project included overhead replacement with underground, conversion of overhead phone service to underground, replacing switching points in manholes with above ground switching, replacing substations containing pole mount transformers with pad mount transformers, adding new feeder to complete a loop between two existing radial feeders and coordinating protective devices installed. Design also included elements to minimize outages and emergency generator run time at the 24/7 operated facility.
